Great Big Christmas Giveaway: Organizing the New Year

Christmas Eve is only a week away, and it's time to be thinking about holiday menus!  We're usually pretty traditional on Christmas day itself, but on Christmas Eve we have a 'Happy Birthday, Jesus' party after church and invite whomever we see.  Normally, we prepare for the party before heading out and return to heavy appetizers, punch or hot chocolate, and birthday cake afterwards.  I keep the food simple so that the kids find things that they like to eat and so that my kitchen duties are minimal.  While I love to serve my family, I want to celebrate this holiest of days, too!  This year, we'll serve:
  • Aunt Mary's Party Punch - recipe to come
  • a smoky bacon cheese ball and crackers
  • baby carrots with dip
  • fruit salad
  • Chex mix, 'mostly' traditional version
  • mini sausages in barbecue sauce
  • birthday cake, decorated by the kids and adorned with candles
  • an assortment of Christmas cookies
During the party, we'll light the last candle in our Advent wreath.  The kids will change from their Christmas fanciness into warm jimmies, and we'll sing Happy Birthday and let the kids blow out the candles.  My husband will build a fire in the fireplace, and before we tuck the kids into bed he'll read a picture book to all of us, something that tells the Christmas story.  (He'll read the real thing from Luke on Christmas day.)

As for Christmas day, our usual menu looks a lot like our Thanksgiving one.  We usually have:

Between now and then, we have some Christmas presents to finish and lots of baking to do.  We haven't chosen our recipes, yet - anybody have any good cookie suggestions??
